Public Housing in Brookville, Ohio

Tight squeeze—the raccoon had to work hard to get back out of the box in the spruce tree that was specifically made for nesting squirrels. The opening was 4 inches in diameter and this animal had to dislocate one leg or hip and get that out and then the other came out. In the end it was a "she" and she gave birth to four baby raccoons under my shop and when she had weaned them, she sent them over the fence and she followed and we never saw them again.

Birdhouses and feeders beware!

We never had any real trouble with them while they lived here -- about 6 months. But some reports they can be destructive. We used to buy bags of cheap dog food and put out for them at night so they were always full and never bothered anybody's trash.

That freaks me out.

They are or were very kind neighbors and stayed, for the most part, under my shop and only came out at night. But the mother often came out in broad daylight and dug up grubs to feed her four youngsters under the shed. We didn't know she had babies until they were out and about, with her, during the daytime. They learned how to climb a tree here before they could do much else. They were really nice animals.
